GE Additive Introduces Arcam EBM Spectra H

The electron beam melting (EBM) melting system offers a large build volume and is designed to handle high-heat and crack-prone materials.

GE Additive’s Arcam EBM Spectra H metal additive manufacturing system is designed to handle high-heat and crack-prone materials, complementing the company’s existing electron beam melting systems. Initially, the Arcam EBM Spectra H will support both titanium aluminide (TiAl) and Alloy 718. Additional Ni-super alloys will be supported from 2019.

The Arcam EBM Spectra H incorporates features and enhancements intended to drive down cost by increasing the productivity of the system. It offers a 39 percent larger build volume, increased from 200 × 200  380 mm to 250 mm in diameter by 430 mm. According to GE Additive, the build speed is as much as 50 percent faster. A 6-kW HV unit means that all pre- and post-heating steps can be accomplished in half the time compared to other EBM machines. Improved heat management via a moveable heat shield keeps heat in the build area, and an improved layering procedure reduces the need for heating, saving as much as 5 hours in a full-height build. 

Arcam xQam automatic calibration technology improves the position and focus accuracy without manual calibration, reducing the process from 3-4 hours to 15 minutes. Other automation technologies include an automated, self-dosing sieve and hopper filling station. The automatic powder hoppers are self-closing when lifted and self-opening when mounted in the machine for simplified setup. The closed powder handling system and dust-tight environment maintain batch integrity and reduces the risk of contamination, while protecting the operator from the powder.

The new system is available to pre-order. It will be manufactured at Arcam’s plant near Gothenburg, Sweden with expected delivery from Q4 2018 onwards.
