Pic of the Week: Laser Hotwire Deposition + Five-Axis Machining
Hybrid manufacturing can be a powerful combination of additive manufacturing and CNC machining, but programming these machines can be a challenge. This week’s Pic highlights a software plugin that aids this process.

Additive manufacturing alongside CNC machining is a powerful combination, but programming such a machine compounds the challenges of providing toolpaths for both adding and removing material.
This week’s Pic is a side-by-side illustration of real-world material deposition via laser hotwire on a five-axis hybrid, and its representation in Mastercam. The use of CAMufacturing Solutions’ APlus add-on for this software makes it possible to move between machining toolpaths and material deposition paths without switching programs.
- Machine: Mazak VC-500A/5X AM HWD
- Programming Software: Mastercam CAD/CAM software from CNC Software and APlus software from CAMufacturing Solutions
- Material: Stainless steel wire on an off-the-shelf pipe flange
