EOS offers EOState MeltPool Monitoring capability as an add-on to its EOS M 290 direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) system. The tool provides automated surveillance and analysis of the melt pool during the DMLS build process for greater process transparency. It is intended for R&D and manufacturing users with demanding quality requirements, supporting better risk management. The tool is also said to reduce time and costs for quality assurance as well as over costs per part. The monitoring tool was developed jointly with Plasmo Industrietechnik GmbH, a supplier of automated quality assurance systems.

EOState MeltPool Monitoring works by observing the light emitted by the melt pool. The tool consists of two photodiodes located on- and off-axis, a camera adapter, a signal amplifier, and spectral filters to separate process light from reflected laser light. EOState MeltPool software offers automatic data error correction and real-time process visualization and evaluation. The EOState MeltPool Analysis Toolbox visualizes data in 2D or 3D mappings and enables the evaluation of indication clusters. The tool works based on three advanced algorithms to obtain different data interpretations. Users can define corresponding MPM parameters within the Toolbox and set thresholds for quality requirements to draw conclusions for quality in the final part from collected data.
