Ambit Series 7 Heads from Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies Enable Multitasking

The Ambit Series 7 multi-task system from Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies adds additive manufacturing capability to machine tools and robotic platforms. According to the company, the Series 7 system enables seamless integration of seven production technologies and offers automatic change-over from adding metal to cutting to inspecting.

Featuring Ambit laser-based directed energy deposition heads, the system is capable of depositing metal with a bead width ranging from 0.5 to 3 mm+ (approximately 0.02" to 0.12") with increased kilowatt (kW) laser capacity and 30 percent reduction in head length and mass. Additional types of laser processing are supported by the Series 7 system, including a new laser drilling head with 0.15-mm (0.006") spot and quasi-continuous wave (QCW) laser compatibility achieving up to 15-kW peak powers for drilling, ablating and finishing metal.

The system relies on a universal docking station with built-in thermal and optical process monitoring and control for assured quality during deposition. Post-deposition quality can be verified in situ using the Ambit tool changeable eddy current inspection head, optimized for detecting surface and subsurface cracks and voids several layers deep with a range of probes using frequencies ranging to 5 MHz.
