Available from NeoMetrix Technologies, the 2014 SP1 release of SpaceClaim Engineer 3D direct modeling software includes a module that enables users to directly modify STL and CAD files in addition to repairing models for 3D printing. STL Prep for 3D Printing can be used to analyze and clean intersections; ensure that the model is watertight; and repair inverted normals, intersecting facets and other issues that can cause print failures.

According to SpaceClaim, the ability to directly edit STL files offers users flexibility. They can slice the model in several sections by choosing a plane, remove features that are too small, separate the STL for multi-material printing, assign color variations, and deconstruct the part and/or arrange features into better positions for a more optimized 3D print. Users also can merge an STL with another STL or a solid, thicken an STL to increase strength, create connecting features, or create options such as overmolds.
