Elb-Schliff introduces the MillGrind, a hybrid machine that combines grinding, milling and laser deposition welding capability. The optional laser head can also be exchanged into the machine via a toolchanger, enabling laser hardening, marking and additive material deposition welding. According to the company, the machine saves equipment costs as well as valuable changing and retooling time.

The MillGrind is said to be well-suited for aerospace and tool and die applications where components are pre-machined and then ground. Laser deposition welding provides an accurate and fast method for metal welding suitable for precision components in aircraft machining, the company says. The MillGrind uses conventional abrasives with superabrasive capabilities and provides XYZ resolution of 0.1 micron.
