Magic Arms, a Stratasys partner, has kicked off a crowdfunding campaign as of July 22 via Indiegogo. The nonprofit provides custom 3D-printed arm orthotics to children with conditions such as brachial plexus injury (BPI), arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which affect their ability to move their arms. Statasys has been collaborating with Magic Arms since 2012.

The organization is seeking funding to complete a redesign of its 3D-printed exoskeleton, which will help to improve performance and reduce cost of the orthotics while increasing access.

According to Whitney Sample, co-inventor, the device “supports and balances the weight of a child’s arms using a 3D-printed frame and resistance bands. Precision bearings in all joints of the device allow children to amplify their limited arm strength. As children grow, new parts can be printed or modified to meet each child’s unique needs.”
