Arcam AB, a provider of additive manufacturing equipment for producing components in metal, has received an order for five of its Arcam Q10 systems from Beijing AK Medical. Beijing AK Medical, founded in 2003, specializes in research, development, manufacturing and sales of artificial joint prostheses and surgical instruments. The company has been an Arcam customer since 2010.

The Q10 systems utilize Arcam’s electron beam manufacturing (EBAM) process to grow parts in powdered metal. Beijing AK Medical’s order of these systems reflects the company’s approval in August from the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) for EBM manufactured implants. This was the first CFDA marketing approval for an additively manufactured orthopedic implant. Both companies indicate that the order will enable Beijing AK Medical to move into volume production of medical implants with the EBM technology.
