Royal DSM has announced Novamid ID1030 CF10 for 3D printing, a carbon fiber-filled grade PA6/66 filament. the material features a low carbon fiber loading of 10 percent while enabling the production of functional prototypes and industrial parts with properties said to be similar to those achieved via injection molding. According tot he company, the materials enable users to take advantage of the easy, fast printing of unreinforced processes while enabling the manufacture of durable and structural industrial parts for harsh environments. The material is said to print parts that are stronger, stiffer and tougher, with higher tensile strength and modulus, high dimensional stability and no warpage.
The Novamid material’s mechanical properties and smooth appearance make it ideal for a broad range of applications that require performance at elevated temperatures, such as under-the-hood automotive parts, protective and supporting sports gear, manufacturing jigs and fixtures, and medical braces and prosthetics. it is also applicable for lightweighting applications.
The filament can be printed on standard desktop fused filament fabrication (FFF) machines with a hardened nozzle at the same speeds used for unreinforced plastics. it has been tested on several open FFF platforms, including GermanRepRap and the Ultimaker 5S. The filament is available in 1.75- and 2.85-mm diameters on environmentally friendly cardboard spools.
