America Makes Opens Enrollment for First ACADEMI Course

The five-day training experience led by America Makes members will focus on design for metal additive manufacturing.

Enrollment is open for America Makes’ first public Advanced Curriculum in Additive Design, Engineering and Manufacturing Innovation (ACADEMI) course, Metals Design for Additive Manufacturing. The course, which is open to both members and non-members, will be held March 5-9 at the America Makes Innovation Factory in Youngstown, Ohio. 

ACADEMI is a collaboration between America Makes, The Lanterman Group and other America Makes members to help speed the transfer of business and technical knowledge of AM technologies to industry. The courses are designed to be a set of training experiences delivered in a hands-on environment, integrating skills from multiple disciplines used in design for additive manufacturing (DFAM) processes.

“There is great value in this hands-on, immersive course as participants will become key enablers in growing a stronger AM community of practice within their organizations,” says America Makes Executive Director Rob Gorham. “Because all ACADEMI courses incorporate research and development processes and techniques emerging directly from America Makes projects that are ready for implementation, the content is cutting-edge and rigorous.”

ACADEMI’s DFAM-based courses are intended to be a path towards industry certification. They are geared to designers, engineers, and technicians working for companies and government organizations that need AM training across disciplines including materials science, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing engineering. 

During the Metals DFAM course, America Makes members from The Lanterman Group, Penn State University, Youngstown State University, Autodesk and 3D Systems will lead participants in exploring advanced design with a focus on new regions of design spaces, engineering, manufacturing, and processing techniques for metal AM.

Participants in the Metals DFAM course should have two years professional experience or production-level experience with AM and traditional manufacturing technologies. Additionally, participants with CAD and structural analysis skills, along with basic AM knowledge, will benefit the most.
