Oerlikon Expands AM Research & Development, Production Capacity in the United States

A new facility in North Carolina will offer R&D services and more.

Oerlikon is expanding its global AM business with an R&D and production facility for additively manufactured advanced components in the Charlotte metro area in North Carolina. Oerlikon will invest around 55 million Swiss francs in this facility in 2017 and 2018, and expects to create more than 100 new jobs at this site over the longer term.

The announcement of the Charlotte facility follows Oerlikon’s successful acquisition of Citim, an AM production company based in Germany. The Charlotte site brings Oerlikon’s AM network to four locations globally, complementing Citim’s sites in Barleben, Germany; Atlanta, Georgia; and the new production facility for metal powders and coatings in Plymouth Township, Michigan.

According to the company, the new facility in Charlotte will offer U.S. industrial customers a single source for a full suite of integrated services for end-to-end advanced component manufacturing, from R&D, design, applications engineering and series production to postprocessing.

The Charlotte site will be fully operational in 2018. However, Oerlikon is beginning its AM business activities in Charlotte at an interim facility.
